Aussie tour differences

Post by Elvis »

I was wondering what sort of cutlrural references didn't work in Australia. Those who saw a show in Australia or those who are planning to see a show, please report back with any references you (as an audience) didn't understand or any jokes that fell flat because of differences in the culture.

And for that matter, please report in on any jokes or references that worked especially well. :)

I'm suspecting the biggest blank stares might come during the video clips. Australians obviously find Al's music funny otherwise he wouldn't be selling gold albums there, but do they get American tv shows?

And it appears we've already got the first report in --

QUOTE oh yeah and in \"a complicated song\" he changed \"moved to alabama where that kind of thing is tolerated\" he changed alabama to tasmania!

Awesome! (Though I don't get the joke. I can only assume Tasmania's a lot like Alabama? ;))

Tasmania is right off the mainland, so anything could be going on down there.

I just contacted alsongs.com about this (yes, they FINALLY have PH songs on there). I haven't actually got a response about it, but yeah...

I'll let that be Greg's call, since he runs the songography, but I can only only think of a few other times Al's changed a single word in the live songs for his audience, so at the very least, you guys are witnessing something special.

He also put "Aussie Aussie Aussie, OY OY OY" in the Yoda chant, or at least at Brisbane last night

I thought the Aussie chant being incorporated into the Yoda chant was very touching, and I'm glad to have been able to experience it (I went to the October 15 concert at Twin Towns).

I assume when ccs said "so... how does it go now?" she was referring to the chant? To answer your question, it went a little something like this:

da din din da
da din din da
na tin tin na
da din din da
da din din da
da din din da
na tin tin na
da din din da

dit dit da
terrigada dit na giggiteeta cut
teeta guddygayna da
terrigada dit na giggiteeta cut
teeta guddygayna da
terrigada dit na giggiteeta cut
teeta guddygayna
da din din da
da din din da
na tin tin na
da din din da

nyaaaaaaaaaa-ahh! PORK!

Homina!
Homina homina homina!

ba ba oom mow mow

(Turn neck to left, make cracking sound)

Hey cutta cutta cutta cutta cutta, eeh ah!
Hey cutta cutta cutta cutta cutta, eeh ah!
Hey cutta cutta cutta cutta cutta, eeh ah!
Hey cutta cutta cutta cutta cutta, eeh ah!

Tahuwai la a tahuwai wai la
Ehu hene la a pili koo lua la
Pututui lu a ite toe la
Hanu lipo ita paalai

Everybody!

Tahuwai la a tahuwai wai la
Ehu hene la a pili koo lua la
Pututui lu a ite toe la
Hanu lipo ita paalai

Au we ta huala
Au we ta huala

Aussie Aussie Aussie!
(audience instinctively respond with "OI! OI! OI!")
Aussie Aussie Aussie!
(audience respond again with "OI! OI! OI!")

Ring ding ding, rum bum bum, riki tiki daba daba dum bum bum
Ring ding ding, rum bum bum, riki tiki daba daba dum bum bum
(heavy breathing)

Heh... heh... heh...
La la la, nice lady!

cutta cutta cutta cutta
cuttyta nogayna noggy teeta cuddadit
naw nay daw
cuttyta nogayna noggy teeta cuddadit
naw nay daw
cuttyta nogayna noggy teeta cuddadit
naw nay

da da cuddagudda dit
naw cuh-ta
da cuddagudda dit
naw cuh-ta
da cuddagudda dit
naw cuh-ta
da da cuddagudda dit
naw cuh-ta da!

And that's that!

For reference, the "Aussie Aussie Aussie" portion replaced the following section of the chant from the U.S. tour:

Zicke zacke, zicke zacke, hoi hoi hoi!
Zicke zacke, zicke zacke, hoi hoi hoi!

Although only a slight difference, it felt genuinely special to me, as I am sure it did to all else who have had privelige of witnessing it.

Oh, and maybe I should mention the fact that during Smells Like Nirvana, he threw not one but TWO cups into the audience. And I am on a terrible high after having caught the first one, the gargle one! Er....I've got it sitting up in my room.....so.....what am I supposed to do with it now?
