Drooling Over Al

I started this topic to get the "drooling over Al" conversation out from under "Forum Problems." Drooling over Al is not a problem. It's our part in an artistic collaboration. Songs like "Germs," "Like A Surgeon," "Pentiums" and "One More Minute" are really a sort of duet, in call-and-response form. There's Al, writhing and slithering and prancing around the stage, and then there's us, the ladies of the audience. Our part consists of sighing, slavering, screaming, and, if we want to do a really thorough job of it, fainting. We're just doing our best to help him send up that whole sex symbol thing, and we don't (usually) forget that he's doing it all for comedic purposes.

Al is attractive, of course, and I'm actually more comfortable with a good-looking guy doing that kind of spoof; I don't really like put-down humor even when the comic is putting himself down. Too much self-deprecation makes me squirm, and not in a good way.

I wonder sometimes whether Al was a little startled when he first realized that, having set out to spoof sexy music acts, he had become one of them himself. He's certainly never shown any sign, so far as I can see, of considering himself God's gift to women. Far from it; he's gleefully lampooned that attitude ever since his career began.

Speaking of Al being attractive, and I can assume that the boys have given this topic wide berth... OE, you touched on something in your post that in our discussions (ahem!) of the subject that we don't get to. Yes, he is cute as all get out, but it is that intelligence, humor and confidence that get me.



That and the writhing and mic licking.

True... but the gawk must have been considerable, since he was tall, shy, and two years behind his classmates on that puberty thing. Ouch!



And then there's the hair. Hair like that can't be successfully suppressed (not without the aid of a professional Hair Lady)-- it can only be gloried in.

This will be my 200th post, officially marking my dizzying slide (in only two months!) from "Newbie" to "Regular" to "Diehard Fan" to "Addicted." I'm not real sure how thrilled I am about this last label. :nervous: But, if I'm going to be "Addicted" from here on out, what better place to post that definitive #200 than the "drool topic?" So here goes...



As I've been doing what Scottidog calls "WAY surfing," I've come across all kinds of stuff about Al. Photos, interviews, concert reviews, album reviews, descriptions of what he eats for breakfast or drinks at parties... But the one genre of "things-written-about-Al-on-the-Internet" that I've been leery about exploring is fan fiction. Maybe that's because I'm also a Star Trek fan, and I've peeked inside the covers of a few too many "original series" fanzines in dealers' rooms. That kind of thing can leave a way-too-lasting impression. And it doesn't help at all that one of the few bits of "Al fiction" I did surf across was a story that re-imagined him as a polygamist with a wife at every concert venue and some truly grievous booking problems. Eep! I don't care what kind of shenanigans fans put Kirk and Spock through, they're fictional characters. But to do the same thing to a real person... words fail me. Pass the Pepto-Bismol.



So it's refreshing to come across someone who does "drool" well. Like "Betsybird", who had this to say when she was being interviewed by VH-1 to determine her degree of Al fandom.

Q:Are you attracted to Al?

Betsy: Well, yes. Al doesn't like to be treated as a "sex-object" or a "boy-toy", but there's no time that I respect his artistic integrity than when he's wearing the ripped black fishnet shirt and is down on all fours singing "Germs".

That's the right spirit, Betsy! And she not only talked the talk, she walked the walk.

After my wardrobe was "approved", I went to make-up. They did want me to wear what I had on, which was a pink lace top with a green lace bra. I put on the gold tank top instead; I thought it was too trashy a look to pay tribute to Alfred M. Yankovic.

Apparently it's within the limits of "okay" to admit finding a performer's stage persona appealing. We can infer that Al has never told Bermuda, "Take that photo of my silver-clad backside down from the website!" because it's still there for our delectation. http://www.weirdal.com/101500m.htm

And it would seem that when Al's a member of another artist's audience, he might do a little noticing himself-- in an appropriate, non-explicit way, of course. He was asked by Pause & Play what he thought of PJ Harvey.

She's excellent. There's something exotic and weird about her, but she's sexy in a bizarre kind of way. It's like a New York sexy vibe. It's hard to pinpoint. She's a great songwriter and a very interesting performer, very eminently watchable.

What makes the difference, seems to me, is staying aware that an attractive person-in-the-spotlight is still a person and not just dream-apparatus, a hook to hang a fantasy on. Yeah, Betsy did well.

I am still looking through the huge pile of vhs tapes I have. I haven't found it yet, but I did find the one hour MTV special of Comedy Artists without a single mention of Al. Not one single mention. Oh, but Adam Sandler is nauseatingly present. You got any of that Pepto Bismol left? You don't want that tape do you?



RE: Fan fiction... I don't even want to go there. I don't know why it is but any fan fiction I have ever looked at seem to end up being pornographic. Ick. Ick. Ick.



The closest I have found was an interview with Al. As I was reading it, I kept thinking there is no way Al said this stuff. Not that it was necessarily bad, but it wasn't AL. In tracking the URL backward, I was pleased to see that it was in fact a fictional "interview." Then I was proud of myself for being the astute Al fan that I am, that I knew a counterfeit when I saw it.

That pretty well describes our boy. Except for that New York thing. Al definately has a California Boy vibe going on. And he's also very eminently watchable. Very. "Weird" can be very sexy.
