That's awesome, Jon! Thanks for telling us.

Okay, this might be a really stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway. I love this song (probably my favorite on the entire SOL album), but the line "FYI it was not a cold sore" continues to confuse me. I would think--based on the joke of the song--that he was trying to tell the girl he's singing to that he has oral herpes (and most likely passed it on to her during their time together), right? But since a cold sore = oral herpes*, wouldn't this line basically be him saying "FYI I don't have herpes"? I guess that could be the intent, but doesn't seem to jive with the "coming clean" thread of the song. I'm sure I'm just missing something here, but thought I'd throw it out to the group.

*not a judgement on those with oral herpes, as I know it is not actually considered an STD and is in reality quite common. But it is true that if one gets cold sores then they are carriers of the herpes simplex I virus.

You have it right, he was tellung her it was herpes and not just a regular cold sore. I dont wsnt to say its a common exprrssuon, but it is one ive heard before, fortunately not from anyone personally.

Okay...so technically it's an incorrect way of saying "I have herpes", but just a softer way of doing it? Thought that might be a possibility, but I hadn't really heard that expression before (other than in the song). Thanks.

It's not a known expression. He is listing off the various lies he's told ("Yes, that dress makes you look fat", etc) and presumably at some point in the past he had told her "Oh this? It's nothing! Just a cold sore! :* "
