I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead

I've noticed for a while that "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead" contains the lines "I don't want no part of that vegetarian scene" and "I'd rather have a, a Big Mac or a Jumbo Jack than all the bean sprouts in Japan." What the hey? I know Al's lyrics don't always reflect his opinions though...I'd be disappointed if I found out he actually hated Twin Peaks and thought people should lynch "those donut-eating freaks" instead of simply making a play on David Lynch's surname in "I Can't Watch This." What year did he become a vegetarian anyway? I had always assumed he was a vegetarian basically his entire life and didn't become a vegan until the 90s.

Otherwise, I think this is one of the finest cuts on Al's debut along with "Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung," "The Check's in the Mail," and "Happy Birthday."

He wasn't a vegetarian or a vegan until 1992, when he read the book, "Diet for a New America," which convinced him to go vegan. He ate meat before them, including Twinkie Wiener Sandwiches while he was shooting UHF.

Fun fact about this song:

Outsider musician Wild Man Fischer (of "Merry Go Round" and "My Name Is Larry" fame) heard this song and thought that the line "like wow man, can't you relate?" was actually "Like Wild Man, can't you relate?" So he had this crazy idea that Al was plotting to kill him.

I personally think this song was specifically mocking the lifestyles of people in San Luis Obispo.

Are you thinking of Moon Man or Mac Tonight? Because there's a difference.

Did Al and Larry ever reconcile?
