After much deliberation (OK, not paying attention to this post :P ), I'll change it.
You have quickly thought up such matchless phrase?

Anyway, I hope something can be done to rectify this situation.

Now this is interesting....

Code: Select all

4.  Taco Grande featuring Tim Buppert
Written by F. Cooke, Gerardo Mejia, Alberto Slezynger, Rosa Soy
Published by EMI April Music,Inc. (ASCAP)/F Cooke/Pub Settlement Acct. (ASCAP)/Telearte Florida Inc. (ASCAP)

I was fully expecting to see Al's name somewhere in the liner notes. I'm guessing those other people are the original writers of "Rico Suave." I don't know how royalties work for a cover version of a parody. Do the original writers get the royalties, or does the person doing the parody get the royalties, or is it somehow split? It's kind of an odd situation. It's probably not something most record companies deal with on a regular basis.

But I highly doubt there's any kind of conspiracy to cheat Al going on here. I've gotta believe Walt Disney Records lawyers researched it and did the right thing. I can see an argument where a parody is legally treated as a cover version, and in that case, the original writers would get credit. You'd think Al's name would be in there somewhere for the new lyrics, but I guess not.

As for the song... it's kind of an interesting what they did with it, but I don't really "get" it. I guess it would make a little more sense to me if I saw the movie or something.

It was a picture of an old girlfriend.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

Unfortunately, seeing the movie won't help one understand why this cover exists, since the album is a loose tie-in at best in that it's themed around food and utilizes the characters.

Of course, "Ratatouille" is definitely worth seeing on its own regardless.

That's disgraceful that Al isn't even mentioned in the linear notes.
