The Behind the Music and Driven specials describe it a hell of a lot better than I do, but basically it was Al and the band's first professional gig, and they were set to open for Missing Persons. The crowd consisted of a hardcore punk crowd, and as soon as they saw Al on stage with an accordion, they began booing. Throughout the show, Al and the band kept getting pelted with anything the crowd had to throw at them and everybody was yelling "Get off the stage!" Despite this, they decided to play the show in its entirety.

When Al was walking back to his car after this had all happened, a 12 year old kid walked up to him and asked "Are you Weird Al?" Al said "Yes." And the kid said "YOU SUCK!"

After that he decided to never open for somebody ever again.

Until he opened for Flo & Eddie at a New Year's Eve show the year after that, of course. And for the Monkees in 1987.

The reallyy bizarre thing is that the "quote" that's attributed to him in the Road to Hollywood installation at Hollywood and Highland implies that he ditched his band after that, which we know never happened. The artist does admit that the quotes aren't real ones.... she did some research, but then whipped out her artistic license and started hacking away.

That Missing Persons concert did leave some scars... Al told Elvis that he was having "Missing Persons flashbacks" before they went and rocked the house at the Bamboozle Festival in May.
"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

Cool, thanks for the refresher, Jace.

I just found an article where Jim, Steve and Bermuda talk about it,

Wow, really? I just discovered "People Who Died" last year.
Does anyone have a recording of this? If so, please link me!
