The MIA Demos (updated 10/9/12)

Post by TheLazenby »

Well, it's about 3 AM and I'm bored, so I thought I'd run down the Demented Discographies list, and make a handy checklist for all y'all of the pre-first album demos that are still missing, and the demos in circulation. (If a song was aired on Dr. Demento, and thus has a considerably larger chance of turning up, it's marked with an asterisk!)

UPDATED 10/9/2012

MISSING DEMOS
Pico and Sepulveda - this recording apparently no longer exists.
Hit Me With A Rock (original demo? may not exist)
Dr. D Superstar* - well, the Doctor aired an excerpt, at least.
American Slob (solo recording)* - Dr. D played it at Alcon 2000.
Psycho
Number One With A Bullet
Mr. Frump In The Iron Lung (guitar demo)*
Orgy On My Own (solo version)
It's Still Billy Joel To Me (studio demo)
Orgy On My Own (keyboard version)
I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead (home demo)
Yoda (backing track only, from 1982)
The Ballad Of Chuck and Diane (demo 1)
The Ballad Of Chuck and Diane (demo 2)
The Ballad Of Chuck and Diane (demo 3)

FOUND DEMOS
Belvedere Cruising
School Cafeteria (bedroom recording, 1976)
Leisure Suit Serenade
Cheerios, Apple Jacks, Cheerios
Nobody Here But Us Frogs
Dead Car Battery Blues
Mr. Frump In The Iron Lung (original 1977 demo) - in the hands of a private collector, and not widely circulating
Hit Me With A Rock (second demo)
Never Met A Person As Wonderful As Me
Crampton Comes Alive
American Slob (full-band remake)
Belvedere Cruising '78
The Beverly Hillbillies Miss You
You Don't Take Your Showers
My Bologna - released on the Capitol single
More Songs About Food (bathroom version) - same as the live version from 1979, except without "Crampton"
School Cafeteria (remake) - released on the Capitol single
Baby Likes Burping
Gotta Boogie (original version)
You Light Up My Life
It's Still Billy Joel To Me (original version)
Miniature Golf - Damaskas with Al and Barnes & Barnes
Robert Hilburn - Damaskas with Al and SuLu
Yoda (original version)
Mr. Frump In The Iron Lung (third demo) - released on the EP
Happy Birthday - released on the EP
Gotta Boogie - released on the EP
I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead (studio demo) - two versions are circulating; one is in poor quality and is a slightly different mix
Stop Draggin' My Car Around (demo 1)
Stop Draggin' My Car Around (demo 2)
Stop Draggin' My Car Around (demo 3)
Pac Man
The Check's In The Mail
I Love Rocky Road

All I can say is, if you have KMET Demento shows, DIG THROUGH THEM! You might find one of the aired but not circulating demos!

Wow. I didn't even know Al made a demo of these. I would love to hear that!

I can't find any record of Al doing a song called "Miniature Golf". However, Damaskas did a song with that title. It's very possible Al could have played on that song with him. Where did you hear about "Miniature Golf" anyway. This is the first I've heard of it.

-Edit- Ah, I just looked at the dmdb.

Ditto. I think the song would sound a whole lot better as the parody it was meant to be...

I still wonder when exactly "Crazy Cow Therapist" was recorded (BHDish?).
I'm ranking every Beatles song on my new pop culture blog. Check it out!

Yep, "Miniature Golf" is a Damaskas demo with Al's involvement. (Actually, it was submitted on a tape of Al demos.)

Al's #27 Fan, I'll be private messaging you about one of your songs...

Wait.... But I thought......

I think I actually have almost every song listed on the second list. It does make you wonder though if Dr. D still has any of those unreleased ones though.
The name is John, but you can call me JD! ^~^

Nevermind, false alarm everybody, thought we turned up something new...

Incidentally, I've gotten to hear the very first demo of "Mr. Frump" and it's not that interesting, particularly. Although, it's quite funny to hear the Doc introduce Al as "Alfred Yankovic, a student at Cal Poly"...

If only he knew. ;)

That's an interesting list, TheLazenby. I haven't heard a lot of those. I'm with Anth, though. I'd love to know when CCT was recorded.
Oh by the way, I've cracked the code.
