Songs that I omitted from this list:
One More Minute - Elvis - Probably, but is there a similar song? I
don't have the resources to listen to every Elvis song...
Melanie - 54-40 - I hear no evidence of this, at least not to any of
54-40's big hits that I'm aware of.
When I Was Your Age - Don Henley - Perhaps, but I couldn't find
anything that sounded similar. Plus it's fairly unlikely that he
would do TWO Don Henley style parodies.
You Don't Love Me Anymore - Extreme - The video was a direct parody...
but I'm not so sure about the song. There aren't enough similarities
for me to either "Hole Hearted" or "More Than Words" to warrant style
parody status.
Callin' In Sick - Nirvana - If we forget the first few notes, there
really is no resemblance to any Nirvana song that I know of.
I'm So Sick Of You - Elvis Costello - As with Elvis Presley, I don't
have the resources to verify this or find a song that closely matches
it.

I think a lot of the style parodies incorporate elements from more than one song from the artist in question. I always thought Waffle King had some "Sledgehammer" in it, too. And Dare to Be Stupid has some references to other Devo songs in it, too. I think "Beautiful World" might be thrown in there. But your list is pretty cool! I don't know a lot of the TMBG stuff, and I think Germs is more like "Closer" by NIN. Just my thought on it.

I agree........A style parody, I always believed, meant it "copied" an artists' style rather that an exact song.On 2002-01-06 23:29, algonacchick wrote:

That's what I think, too. But, I also think there are some songs that are closely modeled after a specific song, or contain elements from a specific song. Or something like that...

Style Parodies
Yeah, Al's style parodies usually will take one artist and grab references from a number of their songs. For instance, "Dog Eat Dog" is obviously a style parody of Talking Heads. Of course, their well-known "Once In A Lifetime" line is riffed on ("You may ask yourself...etc."), but so are lines from other TH songs. The line about "Do I smell jelly donuts?" is lifted from TH's song "Cities" ("Do I smell home cooking?"), and the last part where he says "Dog Eat Dog" over and over and makes strange sounds in-between is a spoof of TH's finale to "Crosseyed and Painless" (just to name a couple of examples).
I love "Dog Eat Dog". It was great to see him perform it live on Friday night wearing the David Byrne Big Suit!

i think that one more minute is along the lines of Spend This Night with Me in Top Secret with Val Kilmer because when i first saw it i thought it was the one more minute video. the resemblance is uncanny!
Well, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a direct reference by Al. If you check Bermuda's FAQ section on weirdal.com, you'll find that "Top Secret!"
is Al's all-time favorite movie!
