I don't remember what the Ask Al answer was, but as I recall, the producer wanted to talk to band members, friends, or respected associates of Al's.

actually the ask al answer was that the producers wanted to keep the ratings up.

And indeed, it was the highest-rated BTM to date!! That's why VH-1 jumped on the Al bandwagon so fiercely, they saw how his ratings were!

I don't know where Al's BTM stands since it first aired almost 3 years ago, but VH-1 still seems to like it and runs it regularly.
