I used to loop out background vocals from karaoke tracks that I've downloaded, with Adobe Audition to make them purely instrumental before I discovered Soundfonts, MIDI-to-WAV software that used soundfonts, and now Karaoke-Version.com (since they give you the option of having a pure instrumental track!) The splicing is tedious and sometimes time-consuming, but when it's all done, the final product is very rewarding.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know that people were still responding to this...

I believe the programs I used were Creative Wave Studio (which is a rather old, clunky program) and WavePad. I don't have Adobe Audition on either of my computers.
