We're less than 6 hours away from the first show of the 2022 tour! I'll be heading upstate in about 2 hours, who else will be there?

The band is back in form, and haven't missed a beat in the last 2 years. All looking quite a bit greyer than last time I saw them but just as talented. I hung out with my friend Jason and his dad in the lobby before Emos set but didn't see anyone else I recognized. Poughkeepsie is a weird city (Emo described the city as the perfect place to pretend to be the Omega Man just by walking down the street after 6pm) in that everything is either closed on Tuesday night or requires a reservation so my wife and I wandered around for a while before finding a suitable place to eat (Nelly's Dominican food -- really good but also very slow) so we got into the theater about 5 minutes before the show started. Emo was 7:30-8 and Al went on at 8:20 and finished at 10:15 for those keeping score.

Fun Zone live - I predicted this one correctly to open the show

Lame Claim to Fame - first time since Mandatory tour, with Ruben on cowbell!

Bob - Al on harmonica, Steve unfortunately not on the upright bass at all tonight

CNR - the New York Times named this one of the top 5 songs ever written about Charles Nelson Reilly

Why Does This Always Happen to Me - oh of my favorites. But this was the point I was wondering if they were only doing 21st century songs on this tour....

UHF - Al teased us about writing a new song for the new movie, but due to a non-disclose agreement would have to instead do the song from the movie that came out 2 days before Daniel Radcliffe was born. I noticed a lot of straight accordion coming through and I'm not sure if it was intentional. Al mentioned that there have been no new developments in accordion MIDI technology in the last 4 years so he was playing the same one as the first vanity tour.

Skipper Dan - first time I've seen since 2010! They had a lot of trouble getting it started, and had a couple of false starts. Al used a bullhorn for the lame jokes.

Nature Trail to Hell - was expecting this one on Friday the 13th/my birthday next month, but always welcome. Love the lighting effects and the crank Al plays at the end. Went straight into....

Velvet Elvis - this was one of my least favorite songs until I saw it in 2018, where I got a new appreciation for it. This was my first time seeing it since it became a part of my regular location, and it's still an amazing song and better than the Kasey Musgraves version.

Close But No Cigar - Al mentioned how he missed his little table of instruments and got out the vibraslap (no solo)

Dare To Be Stupid (Lounge Version) - another new arrangment with some amazing lightning. Al told this BS story about how he first met Steve and Jim at some little lounge bar in Florida in 1981 and they were performing this song. He also mentioned that they are NOT recording these shows for Stitcher so this song was for our ears only.

Dog Eat Dog - absolutely crazy strobe lighting on this one. "The best song on my worst album" -- Al

Young Dumb and Ugly - a request from Jim. Still done an octave lower and Al still took photos during the guitar solo

You Don't Love Me Anymore - Al threatened to smash all of Jim's guitars at the end

Craigslist - Al started doing this thing towards the end of the first vanity tour (long after I saw my last live show on that tour) where he's go into this long trippy improv during the barista verse. I finally got to see this live tonight and it was THE highlight of the night. If there's one repeat I want to see again this year, it's this.

Harpsichord solo!!!! ran into Melanie

Dave and Ethan's 2000 Inch Podcast Theme - Al wanted to focus on a song written by Grammy winning Jim Kimo West, and he chose this song which I'm unfortunately not very familiar with. I really need to listen to more of Kimo.

Albuquerque - had a nice long disclaimer about how hermaphrodite is a medical term and nobody should get offended about him singing about them, especially not a hermaphrodite with a flock of seagulls haircut and one nostril.

(Encore break with a standing ovation)

You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon cover) - sounded awesome! A song so you know what to call him if you run into him after the show (which I didn't since I have a long drive home and work tomorrow)

Parody Medley - same versions of Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana and White and Nerdy from the last vanity tour, but new versions of Word Crimes (in a style I can't really describe) and Yoda WITH THE CHANT (plus some new verses, I heard something about cryptography in there). Always been a highlight of the show for me and hasn't been seen since 2015! A much better way to close the show than the last couple tours were.

1st show down. Got 3 more, next one in 2 weeks. It'll be interesting what direction the rest of this tour goes. Aside from the Podcast song, there weren't any new songs to me. There are still some from the last vanity tour I'm still chasing that'll hopefully make an appearance.

Just one note since this forum won't let me edit that Al only used his accordion on UHF, Skipper Dan, Nature Trail and You Can Call Me Al. He did NOT play it on Yoda, which gave him more arm flexibility during the chant.

Thank for the review! Does this fit the description of the Craiglist from tonight? "Extended bad trip phone call with Mother"

Man, been a long time since I've logged on here. So based on the setlist that Dave posted, it appears the Key of Skipper Dan has been lowered, as well as Why Does This Always Happen To Me, UHF, and Nature Trail to Hell from last tour. Does that sound correct?

Additionally, someone mentioned that there were microphones on the stage facing the audience like last time they recorded it, so I'm interested to see if maybe they do release some of these recordings at some point (even though Al said they weren't recording for Stitcher Premium, maybe some other sort of release)

Fingers crossed some audio of this show surfaces, as I'm excited to hear all the new arrangements!

What a great start to the bigger than ever Vanity Tour! I managed to snag a last minute 3rd row seat from an unfortunate soul who had to bail on going.

The opening night setlist managed to combine songs I'm not really into in concert, or tired of seeing (CNR, Close But No Cigar, Skipper Dan) With some great Deeeeep Cuts (Nature Trail, Velvet Elvis) and personal favorites (Dod Eat Dog, Bob). I haven't even heard about the extended "Trippy Call with Mother" section of Craigslist...that had me rolling. Extra-extra long version of Albuquerque and the return of THE CHANT, made this concert pretty doggone good. Al and the band sounded spot on, no major opening night kinks Have too see if I can snag a seat for Wilkes-Barre now.

PS.....I was the guy from PA who walked in on Emo a couple minutes late and got to banter with him a bit :)

Double PS....Holy Crap they played "You Can Call me Al"!!!!!! I guess we can confirm another 130 fresh covers?

I was curious about those Ds and As. Someone posted a video of the whole show. Skipper Dan sounds like it's in the original key. None of the songs seem to match D or A from the setlist. Also, they are placed oddly on the setlist - looking more like some kind of stray typos than anything.

We did figure out that the A stood for "Accordion", but no clue what the D stood for yet!
