I think to adequately judge Al's music, one has to listen to more than just the lyrics. For one thing, he changes the style of the music at least half a dozen times. Additionally, he has an incredibly fast accordion break in the middle of the song. I would guess fewer than .001% of the population could pull that off. He's just pure genius!

With all due respect, if it really bothers you that much to be reminded of the existence of the country of France when you go out to eat...you need to relax.

the whole thing against france is stupid. The people of france are just thinking what the government tells them to think. Just like the people in america did.



anyway, back to the real topic. genius in france is a very funny and clever song. I just think that if he would have extended any song it should have been hardware store or party at the leper colony. or maybe albuquerky part II or something. the song still rocks.

I don't know that I necessarily agree with that...I think France just got focused on more by our media. Someone had to be our whipping boy, I guess.



Look, I'm just sayin': Americans have a bad enough image abroad as it is.

We only make us look worse when we whip out with infantile stuff like "Freedom Fries".



And please, cool it with the French jokes around here. It isn't unthinkable that Al might have some fans with French ancestry on this board. No one wants to offend anyone.

There was a private citizen here in New Orleans who was actually trying to petition our local government to have the name of our beloved local landmark the French Quarter changed to the "Freedom Quarter"!

All this brings me back to Idiot Cheese. It describes so perfectly those people who insist on the Freedom Fry thing. May I once again say that Genius In Freedom was funny though. It was a nice little play on everything.

Hidey ho, Freedom lovers! I'm glad some of you liked my song. Well, it wasn't really my song, I just replaced French with Freedom. I actually think it's pretty funny the way people were making themselves look like idiots by renaming everything "French" into "Freedom". If we followed that through to the extreme, we would have to rename France "freedom."



Think about it- they are equating "French" with freedom- exactly the oppossite of what they intended. Kind of fitting though, because it was France that helped us gain our freedom from Great Britain in 1776. Where do you think the Statue of Liberty came from?



I'm all for good natured French jokes, just like Canadian, British, and Iceland jokes. But when it gets mean spirited that is a different thing. There wasn't anything mean spirited about Al's song but in the context of all the French bashing going on, it may have seemed so. I probably would have been more inclined to laugh if none of this controversy with France ever started. I've got over being mad about Al making fun of them, but I still don't find the lyrics that funny, but how do I know if that is just because of my perspective. I can't help what I find funny and what I don't. I still find some of it funny, but the lyrics seem repetitive and uninspired to me.



The music and style of his singing, however, is a totally different thing. He does an excellent job of capturing Zappa's style and making zappa references. But I don't know if the song does zappa justice, because some people turned off by the song might think that they wouldn't like zappa. But hopefully enough people will be curious enough to check him out, the other great musical humorist of the century. Not all of his stuff is kid friendly, but it is pretty funny. And he did alot of great instrumental work, guitar, orchestra, computer, etc. He truley was a musical genius. And not only in France.
