The mention of a PVS inspiration in "I Remember Larry" came right from Bermuda years ago on the ghetto--err, newsgroup, specifically referring to the sudden trippy codas of both songs. Now, he didn't necessarily say it was lifted note-for-note (and you're right, it's not really close at all), just that it was a closer match than with the ending of "See the Constellation."

SPOILER The Usher parody is not of Yeah!. It's a parody of Confessions Pt. 2.

Whoops! You're right! I knew that - I just forgot to change it from when the phony stuff was on there.

A lot of songs are listed as specific style parodies on Wikipedia, but after hearing the song in question, some of these seem to be completely off - "Midnight Star" was listed as a parody of "Hold The Line" by Toto, a song which has no resemblance to Al's song whatsoever.

However, I am curious about two things, because I can't find the songs in question - "Dare To Be Stupid" and "Fun Zone" are both listed as spoofs of Devo songs, in particular, "Big Mess" and "Blow Up". Can anyone confirm these??

Updated - pinpointed the style parody targets for "Dare To Be Stupid" and "Twister".

Anyone have a copy of "Blow Up" by Devo? I hear it sounds like "Fun Zone"...

I think "Mr. Popeil" sounds closer to Rock Lobster than Private Idaho.
How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if the wood chuck's name was Prince?

I've got blow up. it does sound a bit like Fun Zone, especially the beginning.

plus, being released in 1988, UHF comming out in 89, and Al being a big devo fan, I'm sure it had some influence. :)

as for what specific song DTBS is supposed to be like: The yellow suits Al and the band wears in concert are devo's "signature" suits. they wore them in the late 70's. however, the sound of devo at that time was VERY different than their synth image later on. I'd say DTBS is most like any of their songs from their 1982 album, "Oh no! It's Devo!". since that album seems to be at the peak of their synthesizer obsession.

also, there is this part in "deep sleep", which is EXACTLY like the part in DTBS

I'm a big devo fan if you can't tell.
