well, do you have to get permission to do a cover of a song?

I've heard that if the song has never been covered on a recording, the first person to cover it has to get permission. But once you have granted permission for someone to cover your song, that opens the gates for any other artists to do the same. Of course, there is the matter of paying for it, but I don't think you need to get permission after the first.

An example...I believe that Madonna was denied permission by Don MacLean to cover "American Pie", but since others have covered it...so she did as well

Remember there's a difference between "cover" (what Madonna wanted to do to AP) and "parody" (which Al did to AP SO well...). Wasn't Don McLean's refusal based on the fact he wasn't a Madonna fan, and didn't like what she was going to do to the song, IIRC?

You know what'd be awesome?

Is if Al did this song live, splitting it up into chapters, and doing one chapter at a time. Like do chapter 1 somewhere in the beginning, chapter 2 after the medley, and chapter 3 right before the encore.
