I don't know. I think that to some degree R. Kelly must have meant it to be funny. Especially the other 7 chapters.

I've never listened to all of Trapped In The Closet, just bits and pieces....I thought that the humor in Drive-Thru was that it was so drawn out, but then I heard this lyric in 'Closet:

"He walks up to the closet
He comes up to the closet
Now he's at the closet
Now he's opening the closet..."

I guess Al took that used it through the whole song...and for some reason I didn't think that R. Kelly would've sung 'Closet the way Al sings Drive-Thru, but it makes sense really Al usually mimicks the original artist's vocal style
The tsunami of immediacy will wash away the flood of grief, and reveal a layer of naive optimism underneath

I really can't tell whether TiTC is supposed to be funny or not...I mean, R. Kelly really seems to think he's very clever, and very talented...:F The song is just so completely ridiculous, ESPECIALLY paired with the video, I don't know how anyone could take it seriously, but I suppose those who watch soaps or feed off of the ultra crazy drama found on Jerry Springer might "connect" with this song on a deeper level...

Needless to say, I just laughed.

What, no one else takes Jerry Springer seriously?

I happen to take 60-year-old man children with diaper fetishes very seriously.

I think he meant it to be funny at parts, dramatic at parts, just entertaining in general. It's a hip-hopera as he calls it. Of course, there is always going to be the looming question of whether we are laughing with him or at him, but I just see it from the larger perspective that if he is entertaining me I like it either way. Al figured out just the right way to make fun of this song.

Something funny - I've heard a live Al track from the early 80's where he does much the same sort of thing as in Drive-thru. It was getting out of the car instead of getting into it IIRC. The same song has the doughnut shop routine, nearly the same, that showed up in Albuquerque almost 20 years later!

If anyone wants to read all the lyrics, this a link. P. S. NOT family friendly -

Personally, I really love this song. It perfectly captures the dinner time ennui we've all had: "What do you wanna do for dinner tonight?"
"I don't know. What do you wanna do?"
"I don't know. I'm not really hungry. What do you wanna do?"
"I asked you first."
"Yeah, but I decided last time".

Been there, done that :D

TitC is one of Al's best.

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it here:

ANYONE who doesn't think this song rocks, has never been in a long term serious relationship. This song is a perfect replica of the only thing my wife and I have argued about in our 12 years together.

Thank you Al for the best song ever!!!! :Y :Y
I hate spelling errors so much. You mix up two letters and your whole post is urined.

That's why I think the basic situation of the song is based on something that actually happened with Al and Suzanne, most likely before Nina was born. It's just too well-written and accurate to have been made up. :D Except for the liver part; I think we can all safely say that Suzanne is smarter than that. And maybe the part about Paul.
