Re: [spoiler][lyrics] Sports Song
People don't like this one? Huh. This was one of my favorites right away, and while I wouldn't put in into my workout mix, I just love it. I think he really nailed the college fight song, and I can hear the Tom Lehrer influence quite a bit. I like pop songs and all, but I personally love it when he suddenly breaks into other styles, like WSD or HTWH, or even, to a certain extent, SYBG, although that is closer to pop than the others. I keep wishing Al would riff on something classical, or an opera aria or something. But maybe I am just weird.

Yikes, it takes a lot of work to figure out what all these song acronyms stand for. I really like the song, and it seems to be my seven-year-old son's favorite on the album (though he thinks Al just told him it's okay for him to write letters with numbers thanks to "Word Crimes", but that's another story)
I don't think you have to be a sports fan to enjoy this one, in fact I think it helps if you're not. It makes fun of the irrational way we look at "our" team.

I've been saying that about the acronyms and how using them should be a word crime, for a long time, but it always falls on deaf ears.darkhornet wrote:Yikes, it takes a lot of work to figure out what all these song acronyms stand for. This is definitely my least favourite. It's a one joke song that goes on too long. Sure it's done well and the music is fine, but it's just very meh to me.

Actually, the real word crime is referring to them as "acronyms."spmahn wrote:I've been saying that about the acronyms and how using them should be a word crime, for a long time, but it always falls on deaf ears.
WSD, HTWH, SYBG, CNR, TMZ
None of those are acronyms. They are initialisms. Acronyms are initialisms that form pronounceable words, such as NASA, ROM, and SNAFU.

You're telling me you can't pronounce SYBG?
I enjoyed it. It summed up every AFL chant there is.

Re: [spoiler][lyrics] Sports Song
I think another thing this song has in common with Weasel Stomping Day is that it's a style parody, yet it's not a style parody of, say, anything you'd hear on the radio.
So in both cases, it's more "And now for something completely different" (And yes, I caught the Monty Python Sit on My Face similarities too. First thing I thought of, actually) and maybe it just throws people off

You have quickly thought up such matchless phrase?

Alright, after my first album listenthrough, this is definitely my favorite song.
It doesn't matter if I do things for a reason, or on a W-H-I-M... Just stand back and enjoy the show, cuz baby, I perform this way!

Re: [spoiler][lyrics] Sports Song
The lyrics screamed Monty Python to me, personally. "We're great and you suck" did go on a tiny bit too long, yeah, but as mentioned before, it might indirect play when sports fans use it to make videos and Vines of lopsided sports things happening.

Re: Sports Song
This is my favorite original song from the album, I guess mostly because it reminds me of Now That We're Men. But also because it's so funny hearing a team song mocking the other team
