I saw an article a few days ago questioning the relevance and timeliness of the targeted originals on Mandatory Fun. I think in retrospect, this is the most topical an album has been. Besides the fact that Fancy was still #1 on Billboard upon release, I've heard so many of the targets played recently without even going out of my way to hear them. Just tonight I was at a concert, and the music being played during the intermission between bands included Blurred Lines, Get Lucky, Happy, and Timber... certainly a step up, in terms of timeliness, from Alpocalypse, in my opinion. I loved TMZ and Party in the CIA but they felt dated... conversely, none of the parodies or polka songs on MF felt dated to me at all.

Drewdy is right. The album is more contemporary than usual, though even still all but Fancy were recorded in 2013 (Radioactive was 2012, and some in the polka were 2011). I am really looking forward to seeing what Al does with online distribution. I'm sure there have been countless cases throughout the years where Al would have had an amazing idea for a lead single-worthy parody but the timing just wasn't right. From now on, every release will be timely, and hopefully lead single quality too.
EDIT:I just realized I called drewdy "Drewby" so I edited my post. Sorry Drewby and Drewdy!!!!!

I think Alpocalypse felt so dated just because Al took longer than usual to search for a lead single that he thought would be a suitable follow up to White and Nerdy's mega success...and then he decided to go with "Born This Way". I agree with Jon and Drew on the album's timeliness. Mandatory Fun really feels like a 2013-14 album to me parody-wise, and that's a good thing.

You know what blows my mind? There isn't a single one star rating on Amazon for the Mandatory Fun album. I mean, the pure awesomeness of the album aside, there aren't even any trolls who have popped in just to be annoying by doing that. With that in mind, too, nearly every rating it got has been five stars.

It would make sense if trolls did that with an album by Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga, but doing that to an album by Weird Al would be seen by most trolls as a waste of effort.

I find it hard to believe that's something internet trolls consider.

As a former internet troll myself, I can assure you that they do.

Eight days, eight videos, it's like Hannukkah in July! Without the chocolate and presents like socks and stuff.

I am going to miss getting an Al video a day
In other news, here's an article about recording at a studio in Echo Park:

Al decided to shake things up with this last album. He ditched his old mixer and studio.
