I was watching Johnny Dangerously the other night (theme song by "Weird Al" Yankovic) and little Johnny asked the doctor how his mothers Pancreas was. I thought it amusing

I really didn't like this song. It was way too drawn out.

"I’m gonna be ‘round my vegetables.
I’m gonna chow down my vegetables.
I love you most of all, my favorite vegetable. "

I don't think this has been mentioned so I thought I'd share my thoughts on Pancreas. The whole song is a general SMiLE/Brian Wilson style but Vega-Tables shares a similar lyric flow and concept. The SMiLE songs Vega-Tables and I'm In Great Shape were born out of Brian becoming somewhat obsessed with health during the SMiLE era. A song about the pancreas almost fits into that theme on the SMiLE album exclusively. So what you have in Pancreas is a parody of a concept, an album, a song, and a man all in one.

I have to disagree just a little bit, Marcus. While he did listen to SMiLE for inspiration, I can also detect influence from Pet Sounds, especially Wouldn't It Be Nice. You know when I saw the making of video, and I saw Al messing around with the fruits and veggies, I thought he was recording something for Pancreas, since in Brian's song Vega-Tables, people actually chew on them for the percussion. In fact there's a popular rumor that Paul McCartney is one of the people who came in to do the veggie percussion.

I'm not denying that there may be ties to other songs.. I don't think there is one section that sounds specifically like Vega-Tables, but my point is the lyrics have a similar inherent silliness to them and fits into Brian Wilson's health inspired theme. I just assume Al knew about Brian's health craze and thought about it on some level when creating Pancreas.

I know Paul McCartney chewed celery for the original SMiLE recording, but I don't know that he was on the new SMiLE recording.
