I mean no disrespect, but I think that might be splitting hairs just a bit there. Usually when one uses the phrase "sung to the tune of," that means that a given song is a straight parody. Granted the writer didn't hear the song themselves, so they can't say with 100% accuracy of course, and they may very well have been led to believe that the song is question is a parody, but I really don't think they were trying to indicate otherwise in the article.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right or anything...after all, writers often come off as a little clueless or are just plain incorrect when it comes to Al's originals. I'm just saying a writer probably wouldn't have used such wording if they truly believed that a song was actually going to be a style parody.

I think it will most likely be a style parody of "We Are the World" in the same way that TNSWC was a style parody of "Black Gold," meaning that it will essentially be a parody but just different enough that it's NOT a direct parody.

Could you imagine a video for a we are the world parody...

a lot peeps who worked on that record have been parodied or even poked fun at by Al before...

I could see it as an UHF type video....

There's no question that such a video would be fun to see, especially if it's using the concept of Al appearing as all of the individual artists (similar to the "UHF" video, as you said), but...well, the questions and objections raised about a "We are the World" parody have been discussed endlessly already (not to mention the on-the-record debunking by Al).

But yeah, you do have a point, but I just don't think such a video would be enough of a reason to make such a parody the lead-off song (or at least one of the two parodies that usually make it into videos).

Before Poodle Hat came out, Volcano allegedly faked the posting of all of Al's new songs on the web for illegal download... perhaps they are thinking of doing the same thing, only when you try instead of getting what you want, you end up with the song "don't download this song" ?

I guess that's possible, but would that be in lieu of it actually appearing on an album? I know Madonna did something similar a couple of years ago (I believe she just scolded people), but I doubt Al would record an extra song just to use it as a "gotcha" for downloaders, especially if it is in fact a parody.

But then again, there's so much conflicting information about this rumored song, so who knows what it is.

When Barenaked Ladies' Maroon came out, they flooded the download networks with MP3s that started out as clips from their leadoff single, Pinch Me, but ended up being a conversation between two of their band members about why you shouldn't download.

Kind of a turnaround, seeing how Steve Page has been in the news lately.

I'm actually hoping they do that again. After all, that was the way we found out what the tracklist was (even though a lot of people didn't believe it at first).

That'd be nice, but I doubt they'd try the same trick twice in a row.
