CG - sorry that you're still having to be a closet SOL fan. You just keep enjoying the heck out of it. We've got your back!

My husband likes folk music (yeah, really) and stuff that puts me to sleep. But he knows how much the rest of the family enjoys Al so we get to play it with loud abandon morning, noon and night. He agrees that Al is a genius and appreciates his dedication and effort. (I think he secretly likes the music... ;) ).

Anyway, maybe your dad will ease up a bit. Tell him he's hurting your feelings. Tell him he's hurting all our feelings - cosmically. :P

Good luck!

Lisa

My husband is not a big fan but appreciates his work and how talented the band is. So, I don't insist in playing Al constantly and he doesn't insist on playing his Lucinda Williams all the time. She is a great talent too but she depresses the heck out of me. Give me some "in your face" angry, depressive Ben Folds for that! :P

Regarding the Advisory Label brouhaha earlier in this thread, I'd like to see a special sticker on Al CDs:

APPROPRIATE FOR
ALL AGES
BUT A SENSE OF
HUMOR IS REQUIRED!

That'd be more like the video-game rating stickers that wary parents are already used to.

As for SOL, I wasn't sure at first, but with the exception of "Pancreas," I love it so much! I can't stop listening to it/watching it! And neither can my kids...my 3-year-old son Bennett and 7-year-old daughter Elise are totally obsessed with the album, especially "Weasel Stomping Day," "Canadian Idiot," and (my own favorite) "Close But No Cigar."

The best bit? The studio footage Suzanne shot for the DVD side. I always said that Al was so sexy that I could watch footage of him eating celery and he would still be sexy. Now I know for sure! Mmmmmmmm...and I don't mean the celery! :9~

Elise was confused by the song "I'll Sue Ya," so I told her that I think Al just likes shouting his wife's name (Sue! Sue!) Speaking of ISY, is it a style parody of someone? I'm too old and out of the loop, and my 17-year-old daughter didn't know either. My husband guessed Korn, but I haven't heard one way or the other. BTW, the best part about having met my hubby in alt.music.weird-al is that he's just as excited as I am when a new CD comes out! We bought two copies of SOL the morning it came out so neither would have to wait 'til the other was "done" with it.
Praise AL!

Karen/Kaz

AL is all, All is AL !

(Thanks for saving my life, AL!)

That's so cute. I love how you and your husband bought a copy each :)

I think it's been agreed that "I'll Sue Ya" is a style parody of Rage Against the Machine. They appeared in Angry White Boy Polka as well.

Whoo.

Good stuff, huh! :Y

Pic provided to by 'Get Bent' at 50mmlosangeles.com. I paid my $5 to join that site and posted a link to the ALbum cover, asking if anyone could help identify the location or artist. 'Get Bent' said its behind the Homeboy Silkscreen building and provided me with this picture he took!

In another chapter of my personal ongoing "Life Imitates Al" saga, I was at a professional conference today and Father Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries, was the keynote speaker. He really impressed me. I think I'll send him a donation in celebration of our very own "homie's" current album's success. After all, Al was able to get straight outtta Lynwood in the first place because he had people in his life who loved him, supported him and believed in him. Fr. Boyle and his colleagues are basically doing the same thing for people who are much more of a challenge to love, support and believe in.
"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.
