I'm questioning the motive here.. Al says the "first single" will be up for download. Is this the first song
he'll release as a single, or the first
song off the album?
I know in the past albums, both have been the same. But to offer a free download of a song before releasing it
to sell? Just seems a bit odd to me, marketing-wise.

*snaps out of it*
NEW WEIRD AL SONG SOON! YAY!!!
That's better

Volcano doesn't release singles, so it's the lead track.

You make a good point, Friz. But let's face facts. Al knows perfectly well that people will download his songs, legally or not. By offering a legitimate free download, he hopes to attract casual listeners to the album, in hopes that they'll fork over the cash to buy it. Plus, he also knows that his radio airtime will be limited at best and that the next most logical means of getting his music heard is on the Internet.
Also, just look at the publicity he got by releasing "You're Pitiful" as a free download. If he can harness the buzz created by that fiasco and turn it to the attention of his new album, he just might be able to raise record sales.
Clearly, Al is doing everything he can to raise awareness of his new project and to SELL SELL SELL! Remember, his dedicated fans (ie: Us!) will buy his new album regardless of what promotion tactics he uses. This stuff is really to gain media attention and attract the general public. Will his new marketing scheme work? Only time will tell.

With the exception of the "UHF" soundtrack (and, it could be argued, "Poodle Hat," since it technically didn't have one), the lead single for every studio album has always been the first track.

sometimes bands throw a curveball (like BNL's album "Maroon" the first single was the third song...same for "Everything To Everyone"))

I know technically it's not, but I consider You're Pitiful to be a part of SOL.
I have it listed on my iTunes as SOL... I don't care if SOL is 13 tracks long (which it kindof is.)
Al releasing YP early and not on the album is so cool. and then recording a new song to take it's place. Are we going to be able to tell what is the replacement?
(Wow. This was off-topic.. Let me turn this back on-topic!)
Releasing another song online and then on the album is very interesting. Sounds like Al!
I will be sure to listen to the World Premier, but I will wait to obsess over it until I get the Album and can listen/watch it in 5.1 SURROUND!

The replacement is most likely the Chamillionaire parody or Taylor Hicks parody, lamename.
And I know one thing, I am SO gonna listen to the new song, well, when it appears on Al's MySpace, atleast. Although I'd be torturing myself by not playing NOTHING but the new song song, I'll probably play YP along with it... And nothing but those songs. And, much like anyone else, I include YP as a part of the album.
