Yeah, I feel somewhat the same way. While this sounds like a great idea, it seems to be different from the older songs Al has parodied recently. Both of those songs had to do with very big movies, so it was a bit more acceptable for Al to parody older songs. TSB as a lead single was very much acceptable because of Star Wars. It was a huge pop culture event. Maybe this song does address a big pop culture event. If it's sole subject is downloading, it feels like it should have been done a few years ago. The whole illegal downloading thing is not nearly as big as it was. I'm sure however Al does it, it will still be great. I have faith in Al, and I know he'll do a fantastic job with whatever he does. I can't wait!
"We Are the World" is over 7 minutes long. I hope Al doesn't shorten it like he did with "McArthur Park" and "American Pie."
Anyway, I agree that the subject is a little dated, but it can still work if the song targets not only SONG downloads, but movies as well. It was big news when "Revenge of the Sith" was illegally downloaded this past summer, so it might include that angle as well. Also, he might touch on LEGAL downloading as well, since iTunes and iPods are bigger than ever at the moment.
But remember technology is an ever-changing field. Something that is big news one year can be out of date a year later, even a month later in some cases. I think Al it's somewhat risky, but also brave to tackle technology as topical songs. Al's done technology-based songs on the 3 of the last four albums ("Frank's 2000" TV," IAATP, "eBay"), and I think it's great he's continuing to follow this trend.
Hey! Psycho Pat here, posting for the second time ever.
When I read the article concerning Bill Plympton and his career as an animator, I couldn't help but think that Al must be doing a Kanye West parody, since the article really focuses on Kanye and Plympton collaborating on the "Heard 'Em Say" video.
Now, it might not be that exact video that he would be parodying, but Al has used other elements from other videos the artists have done before in his videos. Look at "It's All About the Pentiums" for example.
I know that "Gold Digger" has been Kanye's most recent hit, so maybe Al is doing that.
As for "We Are the World", I'm not sure if Plympton clarified this bit or not. It really doesn't say.
If Al did any Kanye West song, I'm sure it'd be Gold Digger. But I don't think this connection with Bill Plympton is enough to really suggest Al is parodying Kanye West at all.

A Kanye parody would work pretty good. But with the Kanye/Plympton collaboration being pretty recent, I don't know if that's something happening at this time.
