And if there are any Bealtes fans here, doesn't the opening guitar riff in Hardware sound like the opening to "Hey Bulldog"?
Well, "Hey Bulldog" has extra notes in it but I do hear a resemblance.

I've also heard that Waffle King as been compared to some of the Art of Noise's stuff like Closer (To the Edit). ?
I haven't listened to Close(to the Edit) in a few months but from memory I don't think Waffle King would be a style parody of it.
I'll have a listen later and let you know my opinion.
The chorus of Hardware store reminds me of a Broadway musical - the whole song does - except played at 45RPM instead of 33

And I'm also sure Waffle King is not a style parody of Art of Noise

To me, "The Weird Al Show Theme" and "Hardware Store" sound like they could be the first two examples of a new, unique style that Al developed.

Cromulnt, you bring up a point I have been wondering about. I have, until recently, assumed that Al's songs fit into three basic categories, well maybe four:
1. Parody
2. Style Parody
3. Polka
4. Cover
But given that Al has said he "sometimes" does songs that are style parodies, it has led me to wonder if all of the originals ARE necessarily style parodies.
And if not, which ones are just Al's style? Enquiring minds like mine wanna know!

Captain Pedantic made a good point about Waffle King. It most definitely is not a style parody of Art of Noise. I love Close(to the Edit), but I do not hear it in that song at all. I already stated it's a Peter Gabriel style parody. Even hubby, who dislikes Al, said it sounded like Sledgehammer. Hehe, interesting factoid: a king can also be called a potentate. But I'm glad Al picked the word king instead. Waffle Potentate just doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.
Patti
