I missed the VMAs (the only thing I saw was the kissing between Madonna and Britney, and that was just on the news), but I'm getting the feeling Missy did something to Triumph. Did he?

And because I notice these things... why did they film it so it looked like a movie and not a tv show?

I think they usually do it that way. Maybe since The Real Cancoon got released, MTV figured their award show could sell some tickets.

They started using that technique last year. It's gotten so critically drubbed, you'd think they would've learned their lesson...

Nope, I remember it got a jeer in TV Guide and there were other complaints as well from newspapers (I don't remember which ones though).
