How big a fan am I?

Um...pretty big. :) I went to AlCon 3, I went out to Al-ifornia this past summer to see Al's week of shows at the OC Fair, I've got all the albums (minus some cheesy compliations), I've got a ton and a half of unreleased audio and video stuff, I have a website (frivALity), I've got UHF (VHS and DVD), WAY Live! (VHS and DVD), The Video Collection (DVD)...etc., etc., etc.

QUOTE You can get all of Weird Al's songs by going to *cut* and downloading that song-dowloader! It's not illegal or yada-yada-yada... That's how I got most of Weird Al's stuff.

Yeah, but that's kind of like taking Al's paycheck right out of his pocket.

I own every single album and cheesy compliation. :D

I went to AlCon3.

I got a stinken warehouse job just to go see Al perform in Orange County. And I'll do it again in a heartbeat.

I have over 500 pictures of Al on my walls and I'm nowhere near complete of covering my room yet.

I have a truckload of unreleased audio and visual stuff. Truck Backing Up! Truck Backing Up! Truck Backing Up!

I got my Authorized Al. ~hugs her precious book~

I have all the music videos...

I have all the DVDs...Well, one will eventually be shipped.

I have Vans...Such comfty shoes!

A growing collection of Hawaiian shirts. Only 18 so far. Time to check out Thrift stores!

A multiple 27 more things but I'm too lazy to type anything more.

8) Well, if you know a lot about Weird Al, you should've known that he explained about how he doesn't care when people get his music for free, "I think people should be able to get my music for free."

Plus, it's not taking Al's paycheck right out of his pocket because the markets already payed him for the stuff THEY can't sell.

To be honest, I became fan when I heard some MP3's... Currently, I own every CD legal plus UHF DVD and Permanent Record.

My opinion is, that you can't be fan when you ONLY have MP3-files.. Why not? Well, if you search for Weird Al on a MP3-site or Search program you'll find a lot of MP3-files (doh).. 40% of that files aren't exactly song that are written OR sang by Weird Al. We all know the horrible songs like 'Windows 95 sucks' and 'Increase my boobies one more size'. Those are not Weird Al music files, but they've been called that way.. and I hate it..

That's why I think you can't be a real fan..

(And I don't say you aren't a fan.. but not a real fan.... get the idea ? :satisfied: )

Well still, until that day comes, the CD's are still $10-$18 and the cassettes are $8-$13.

I don't think in any twisting of his words has Al ever advocated people to not buy his albums. Now, I may not know as much about Weird Al as you, but I can also quote an example in which he encourages people to buy extra copies.
Plus, it's not taking Al's paycheck right out of his pocket because the markets already payed him for the stuff THEY can't sell.

And where do you think the stores get their money from? The Tooth Fairy?

Even after an album is produced and released, Al like any other songwriter still receives royalties on his music....something he can't get if someone only steals songs off a web site.

So, YES, you are taking Al's paycheck right out of his pocket.

I have 118 of his recorded songs (MP3 coz I can't find any of his albums to buy) and the lyrics to them...And I'm not sure if "I'll be Mellow When I'm Dead" is the official one

19 music videos

3 Anime music videos

Downloaded a few songs he's parodied

Downloaded 2 interviews from the Weird Al Show ...or whatever

Downloaded the entire interview from Space Ghost to Coast

Wish I could get UHF but it's not out in Region 4 (Australia)

Hey, I even bought The Food Album! Part of my rationale was that even though Al didn't like the cheesy compilations (and there is nothing new on them) was that at least Al would get a couple of cents in royalties. Gotta keep our boy supplied in Hawaiian Shirts ya know?

BTW Al... If you get the new album out sometime before I die, I promise I will buy a copy or 27! I'm just saying.

On the subject of MP3s. I have actually listened to a few WAY songs that I don't own. But they only stay on my hard drive when I actually do buy them. <Just got done deep-sixing the 2 or 3 that were still lurking on the hard drive. Now I am a legal beagle! All Al music on the hard drive is bought and paid for 8) >

Before the collapse of Napster, I did actually have a little collection of mp3s, some WAY, some not. But after reflection on the fact that it is an area where you really are taking money from the artists... I got rid of them. And most were of albums that at one time I had actually owned. On vinyl, but disappeared several years ago. Yup, the Bay City Rollers went bye bye and that really hurt! (Hey, I was a young pre-teenybopper in the late 70s. But they were just so darn cute. Especially Ian. Sigh.) Well, now you really know to much about me!

As far as how Al feels about it, I went to the horse's mouth. (Lot's of things are attributed to Al that he had nothing to do with. If in doubt, just go to the source http://www.weirdal.com)

According to Al (from the Ask Al Archives)he does have a couple of problems with it:

Jeremy McCarthy of Fairfield, CT asks: Hey Al!!!!! What do u think about Napster? I just want to know if you approve.

I have very mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I'm concerned that the rampant downloading of my copyright-protected material over the Internet is severely eating into my album sales and having a decidedly adverse effect on my career. On the other hand, I can get all the Metallica songs I want for FREE! WOW!!!!!

Bill of Torrance, CA asks: Did you sing the following songs: Toast, Baby Got Jack, Ugly Girl, and Livin' La Vida Yoda. I'm asking because people download these songs and the title would say by Al Yankovic.

No, no, no, and no. This is actually my biggest problem with all those mp3-download services. A large number of the songs which are attributed to me are NOT by me at all. Some of the songs supposedly by me are, in fact, rather profane, and it disturbs me that some people might be led to believe that I'm responsible for them. Check the discography on my web site if you're ever in doubt as to whether something is really a Weird Al song or not.
